Graduate School

Many of our graduates choose to continue their education. 

Complete in as little as one year, shows mastery in specific topic, needs to be enrolled in a Masters or PhD program to complete.

 Usually takes 2-3 years to complete, may require a thesis for graduation, widely available. 

4-7 years of study, includes classes and completion of an original research project.

 Law degree; some schools have a joint JD/MA program for students interested in Women's Studies and Law.

  2 years of study and 2 years of field experience.

 A terminal degree requiring 2-3 years of study.

Professional degree in Public Health, 2 years of study.

Statement of Purpose

This is where you introduce yourself to your future graduate advisors, it is very important! Take your time completing this and seek help.

Tips:

· Apply to SEVERAL different schools

· Apply early. This will set you apart from others.

· Most schools require your GPA from your last 60 units only, you can find a GPA calculator

· If your GPA is low, explain why in your personal statement without being defensive, point to other attributes that make you an attractive candidate.

GRE Testing Information

Some schools require completion of an exam before your application can be considered. Be sure to check which test, if any, is required. The most common exam required is the GRE– Graduate Record Exam: an online exam that must be taken at the Fresno State Professional Examination Services, appointments are necessary and there is a test fee.

Financial Information and Terms

There is a lot of financial assistance available for graduate students, be sure to look out for these! They are not available at all institutions, and may go by slightly different names so be sure to contact the specific campus’ financial aid office.

·Assistantships: Usually teaching or research assistants will qualify for tuition reimbursement and/or a monthly salary from the institution.

·Scholarships and Fellowships: Available in various amounts, does not have to be repaid, and can also be shown on a resume of accomplishments

·Application Fee Waivers: Be sure to check with your school of interest to see if they are available.

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaurette Achievement Program

This program is designed to encourage low-income individuals who are first-generation college students and/or traditionally underrepresented in graduate education to peruse doctoral study. You MUST have completed a minimum of 60 units to apply. You will gain research experience in your field of study, attend seminars and workshops to further your knowledge of graduate school, and be eligible for several research stipends.
