Substitution Policy
Majors and Minors within the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program enjoy the greatest benefits of the program by fulfilling the stated requirements of their degree plan and completing as many courses as possible in residence at Fresno State. Substitutions are considered only on the rare occasion that a requirement cannot be fulfilled within a reasonable amount of time. Students are highly encouraged to maintain regular contact with their department or college advisor to stay informed about their degree progress.
It is the Department’s policy that substitutions can only be considered under the following circumstances:
- The class is NOT a core class (WGSS 10, 11, 103, 126, 143, 153, 172)
- The class is not expected to be taught the semester after the semester that the student is expected to graduate
- The class has been cancelled within the academic year in which the student is expected to graduate
- A serious life change or crisis is preventing the student from attending the class, and the next offering of the class will be after their anticipated graduation date
- A similar class has been taken at another institution, and the chair has determined that the class is comparable to the required class upon review of the syllabus
To discuss a substitution request, students must schedule an appointment with their assigned advisor or the department chair, Dr. Larissa Mercado-Lopez lmercadolopez@csufresno.edu. Substitutions are ultimately granted by the department chair. Requests should be discussed as soon as students anticipate an issue completing their requirements.
