Mission: Empowering people to access life sustaining resources.
Story: Founded in 1972, Centro La Familia Advocacy Services began as a small, urban-centered agency that provided direct advocacy and intervention services. Over the past four decades, we’ve grown into a multi-service agency that offers social service and education programs in both rural and urban areas of Fresno County.
Today, Centro La Familia provides a broad range of services to un-served and underserved residents in more than a dozen different communities. Each week, our experienced and specialized bilingual staff (English, Spanish and Hmong) works in remote areas of Fresno County to assist community members who face transportation barriers.
We serve more than 10,000 clients annually and reach more than 100,000 community members through outreach and education programs, presentations, workshops, special events and multi-media.
Our nonprofit, grant-funded organization is led by an executive director who reports to an all-volunteer board of directors.
Services: Centro La Familia Advocacy Services offers a broad range of programs designed to assist crime victims, support families and children, promote health and wellness, encourage civic engagement and more. Many of our programs provide outreach, advocacy and education services to those in need. Working through our bilingual staff, we deliver those services in a manner that is respectful and culturally sensitive
Through transition and strategic planning, TFC grew from a staff of three to a 43 staff organization at the height of newly arriving Hmong refugees in 2004-2005. TFC was the lead organization in establishing the Hmong Resettlement Task Force in partnerships with other local ethnic agencies, elected officials, and government service providers including the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. The number of staff members has fluctuated based on funding and project timelines. However, TFC has consistently provided core services in mental health, education, advocacy, employment services, and civic engagement.

Services: Behavioral Health Services including counseling, substance abuse, wraparound, meth & suicide prevention Initiative (MSPI). Various other health services include: diabetes care, referrals for social service programs, exercise groups, transportation for health and wellness related topics.

Family Planning Associates Medical Group (now FPA Women’s Health) was founded in 1969, soon after abortion became legal in California. At that time it was called the Avalon-Slauson Medical Group. All of the pregnancy terminations and other medical services were performed at Avalon Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.In many states, abortion was legal only for cases in which continuance of the pregnancy would be life threatening. California law was relatively liberal and many women came from Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and other states to receive legal abortions.FPA’s two physician founders, Dr. Edward C. Allred and Dr. Kenneth L. Wright, began immediately to concentrate on developing simpler and less expensive abortion procedures. In those early years, Dr. Wright pioneered the use of saline amniocentesis, a technique for terminating pregnancy safely in the second trimester.

Marjaree Mason Center is Fresno County's only dedicated provider of domestic violence shelter and support services, including education for victims and youth.
Mission: Marjaree Mason Center supports and empowers adults and their children affected by domestic violence, while striving to prevent and end the cycle of abuse through education and advocacy.
Vison: A community free of domestic violence.
Marjaree Mason Center provides emergency and longer-term Safe Housing, along with a wide variety of support services for victims of domestic violence in Fresno County.
Rape Counseling Services (RCS)

In 1973, Fresno State Women’s Studies students Karen Hale and Kris Schaulfelberger started Rape Counseling Services of Fresno (“RCS”) as a student project in a course taught by Floy Paynter. Their shared idea was to answer a telephone 24 hours a day in Fresno County so that sexual violence survivors could tell their stories and receive help.
There was an unmet community need for a local 24-hour rape crisis line in Fresno County. In 1974, RCS was incorporated as a nonprofit rape crisis center. By 1980, RCS was one of 29 rape crisis centers across California and part of a growing national movement. In California, a State Advisory Committee on Sexual Assault Victim Services formed and established professional training standards for rape crisis advocates. Soon after, in 1983, California Evidence Code 1035.2 was enacted to protect the confidentiality of statements made by rape survivors to rape crisis advocates.
After more than 40 years, RCS advocates continue to answer the 24-hour rape crisis line in Fresno County [559-222-7273]. In the United States, twenty percent to a third of all women and sixteen percent of men are traumatized by sexual violence during their lifetimes. Receiving help for injuries from sexual violence can reduce risk for long-term post-traumatic stress, chemical dependency, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and a range of other health impairments. Because shame and social pressure stops most survivors from sharing their story, confidentiality is essential for sexual violence survivors considering whether to ask for help.
